Post-Op Instructions
Crown or Bridge Treatment

Provisional

  • During your first appointment for a crown/bridge, a provisional crown/bridge is placed on the tooth/teeth involved to protect them while your custom restoration is being made.  This provisional, made of thin plastic, is a universal shade.  Your final restoration will be shaped and shaded to match your own teeth.

  • A temporary cement is used to affix the provisional.  If it comes off, slip it back on and call for an appointment.  Toothpaste can be placed inside the provisional to hold it on until you can come in to the office.  It the provisional is off for any length of time, your tooth may shift ant the final crown may not fit, requiring it to be remade.  Calling for an immediate appointment will reduce this chance.

  • Tenderness at the gum line may occur for a few days.  Sensitivity to cold or pressure is also possible.  Keep the area clean and free or plaque by brushing gently in circular motions.  Avoid flossing the affected area, unless otherwise instructed.

  • Ibuprofen (ie. Advil, Motrin) 400-800mg every 6 hours usually will provide sufficient pain relief.  Be sure to take this with food.  Additional medications will be prescribed if needed.

  • Your bite may feel different with the provisional.  If it is uncomfortable, call for an appointment and a simple adjustment can be made.
